An effort to rename part of a Lexington street in memory of police officer Bryan J. Durman has gotten the mayor's backing.
Mayor Jim Newberry, who is running for re-election this fall against Vice Mayor Jim Gray, announced Friday that he supports changing the name of Hilo Street to Durman Drive. Durman was struck and killed while on foot in downtown Lexington in April.
"I support renaming the street, and I will work with council and administrative agencies to make that happen," Newberry said in a written release. "Our community should never forget officer Durman or the sacrifice he made on behalf of our safety."
The city's Address Committee, which considered the change at its July 23 meeting, is scheduled to meet again Aug. 20.
